Aldous Huxley's Brave New World adapted by Dawn King with original music by These New Puritans is currently touring the UK in a co-production between Royal & Derngate and Touring Consortium Theatre Company.
The first major revival of Peter Whelan’s The Herbal Bed plays at Royal & Derngate ahead of a national tour in co-production with English Touring Theatre and The Rose Theatre, Kingston
James is Artistic Director of Royal & Derngate in Northampton.
He was previously Associate Director at the New Vic Theatre and Theatre503.
James has directed and developed new work by playwrights Katori Hall, David Eldridge, Mike Poulton, Ella Hickson, Roy Williams, Amy Herzog, Amanda Whittington, Arthur Miller, Ron Hutchinson, Dawn King, Dan O'Brien, Dic Edwards, Suzan Lori Parks, Ed Kemp, Molly Davies, Torben Betts, Bekah Brunstetter and composers Rachel Portman, These New Puritans, Orlando Gough, White Lies, Valgeir Sigurðsson, James Johnston, The Bad Seeds, Isobel Waller-Bridge and Elena Langer amongst others. As Artistic Director at Royal & Derngate, he has produced original work by Ayub Khan-Din, Nicholas Wright, Tamsin Oglesby, Phil Porter, Ella Hickson, Oladipo Agboluaje, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Tim Crouch and Georgia Pritchett amongst others.
He has been awarded Fulbright and Schubert Fellowships in Theatre Directing, studied at Cambridge and Columbia Universities and trained on the ITV/Channel 4 Regional Theatre Director’s Scheme and as an Assistant Director to twelve directors including Anne Bogart, Robert Woodruff and Silviu Purcarete.
